Freezer space comes at a premium in our house as we only have the freezer that is part of the fridge. If I arrange everything systematically I can fit an entire weeks worth of meat, bread and some veggies in it, leaving of course just enough room for a cake : )
Over Christmas I do a lot of juggling to fit in our festive cheer, those foods that we don't eat regularly. My weekly menu planning around Christmas revolves around using the biggest packet first just to get back space! Last Christmas I bought a whole chicken, a 2kg piece of pork and 2L of ice cream to use for our family dinner. Unfortunately the kids and hubby were sick for three weeks over Christmas with a stomache virus so we didn't use any of it. I actually cancelled Christmas lunch for the first time ever which was the weirdest feeling. We've managed to eat the chicken but the pork and ice cream are still there using up valuable space. We've been so busy on weekends that we haven't sat down for a big family meal together so there hasn't been a chance to use the pork. The ice cream however is a different story!! You know I could have shared it with the kids but why!!!
My indulgence for the past two weeks has been devouring those two liters, hubby helped a little, just a little!! I love the flavours of Haagen Dazs so I set about creating my own. It's trial and error you know!! my background in food technology helped me...make, test, adjust, repeat. It's hard work!!!
First up was Lyell's Golden Syrup with handful of roasted almonds. Oh...divine!
The kids ate the almonds, so a small adjustment was required.
Trial two Lyle's Golden Syrup with broken Swedish Ginger Snaps. Nice!
Trial three Lyle's Golden Syrup with Australian salted macadamias! Ohhhhhhhhhh!
It tasted like a salty butterscotch : )
Trial four Lyle's Golden Syrup with Australian salted macadamias and a mini Butterfinger!
Let's just say I'm glad the ice cream is finished because this trial and error ice cream flavour development is addictive. New hobby, new flavour will ultimately lead to new waistline and new clothes :(
Go ahead try one, if you like butterscotch you won't be disappointed!!

Lyle's Golden Syrup? I may have to track down a bottle and try this out for myself! What about chocolate ice cream? Mmmmm....
ReplyDeleteGolden syrup is to Aussies what maple syrup is to Canadians! Lyle's is available at Kaldi.
DeleteI like chocolate but I usually chose other flavours over it, especially caramel, butterscotch or nuts!If Baskin Robbins has baseball Park in I will always choose that!!
